I have been a Police Constable in London, a builder/carpenter/joiner on new building sites and a Production Line Operative in a food factory. In 1993 I attended a meeting in our local church hall when West Devon Borough Council announced a new project, to see if a rural community could generate its own electricity using renewable power. From this point on I was inspired to study for a degree in environmental science with the Open University.

When I graduated I was promoted to Environment Coordinator at Heinz Frozen & Chilled Foods in Okehampton, with my main objective being to install an Environmental Management System (EMS) from scratch and gain ISO14001 accreditation within 8 months. I completed it in six and a half months. This entailed writing the manual, training all members of staff from factory floor to Board level (c. 450 people) and carrying out audits. We had only two minor non-conformances at the certification audit.

My next job was at Taw Valley Creamery as Environment & Systems Coordinator. I was very lucky in that I worked with Dairy UK in London & the Environment Agency to help put together the dairy industry’s IPPC Application form in conjunction with others from the industry. I was responsible for the site EMS but as the only formally environment-trained person within the Group I lobbied the Board on subjects such as forthcoming legislation, CSR and future energy strategies. At that time legislation meant that we had to apply for an IPPC permit, which meant that a full environmental impact assessment had to be carried out for the site. I was also responsible for the day-to-day management of the site effluent plant, and so I attended several short courses to learn more about biological treatment of effluent. In conjunction with some great effluent consultants (see links page), I was able to recommend new technologies to improve efficiencies and meet more stringent discharge consents as a result of our IPPC permit.

Whilst I was the Environment Manager at Canon UK (a very environmentally-aware company, with great products!) I worked on energy saving and learned a lot about Corporate Social Responsibility, WEEE waste, and how environmental and social responsibility can result in vastly increased sales. I started working with some Canon distributors to assist them with installing their own EMSs to help increase their sales.
